There are many yarn and fiber choices. You can choose to buy raw yarn (undyed) and roving, from a yarn supplier or you can use a commercial yarn that you already use. If you’re using a commercial yarn just know that you’re going to be paying the full retail price for that yarn on top of dyeing it yourself. If you go with yarn from a supplier you’re usually going to pay about half the price. I don’t mean wholesale, I simply mean buying the yarn from a place that carries any of the following:

* Henry’s Attic
* Louet Sale
* Ashland Bay

If you buy the commercial yarn you are essentially paying for the yarn 4 times.

example: $5 x2= $10 x2= $20 x2= $40

By buying the raw yarn your markup is much less

Yarn Producer——>Store—–>You
example: $5 x2 = $10 x2= $20

Everyone has a mark up. If you find a yarn that you really like; my personal favorite is Classic Elite’s Posh; buy a skein and go for it! Just know that the three yarn suppliers about will have something similar. It’s worth taking a look sometimes.

By the way, I’m not advocating that you not buy the commercial yarn, this is just an alternative as a means to dye your own yarn without spending a small (or large) fortune.

First up, my all time favorite producer/distributor of yarn in the United States is Henry’s Attic. They consistently produce high quality yarns, made of wonderful fibers. Their yarns take dye extremely well, and are easy to find. You can find Henry’s Attic yarns at the following places:

-Handknitting.com has a ton of hand dyeing supplies. They carry Louet Sales yarns, as well as many other luxury yarns
for hand dyeing. You can also buy Gaywool Dyes here. There’s plenty of spinning fibers as well.
