This is a listing of some of my favorite shops to visit, with some notes on each one. These are only the shops that I’ve bought from.
Yarn shops:
Discount Yarn Sale is great if you’re going to buy a bag of a certain yarn. They also carry the full line of Henry’s Attic yarns for your dyeing pleasure. Shipping is around 1-3 weeks, depending on the product you buy. Service has gotten better as they’ve expanded their range. You can find some really great deals here. *Does ship internationally.
Elann is a great source for overstock yarns, plus their own line of yarns is very nice. You have to keep checking them daily to see what’s new, and what’s coming in. The popular yarns go very quickly, so you have to be on your toes. The shipping is quick and the service is excellent. *Does ship internationally.
Handknitting.com has a very large range of items, from yarn, to dye, to fibers for spinning. Shipping is quick if the item is in stock, if it’s not then you might want to pass. One order took 2 months to get to me. It would have been nice if they had told me that the item was out of stock when I placed the order, and then given me the chance to cancel the order. They do have a phone number if you just want to make sure that the items you want are in stock, before you place the order.
Hello Yarn is one of those wonderful stores that you always peek into the window of, but don’t always go in. This is one of the stores that you should cross the threshold of. It’s worth it. The service is excellent. It’s the place on the web to buy a Louet wheel with a growing selection of rovings to choose from. Not to mention that the handspun and hand dyed yarns are lovely. Adrian is building a great place for knitters and spinners to turn to when their local shops fall short of their needs. Plus her selection of free patterns is awesome. She’s got an eye for cables and colorwork. *Does ship internationally.
Knit Witts is a store I found when I was searching for a particular pattern. They have good prices, and a good selection of yarns and patterns. They shipped my package in a reuseable zipper plastic bag, which was nice. They say on their site that shipping takes 10 days, but I got my package in 6. Good customer service, that knows how the little details work in their favor.
kpixie is a very nice shop. They’re known for carrying hard to find luxury yarns. Lately they’ve been expanding to include lots of hand spun and some roving. They also have a nice selection of patterns. Their customer service is wonderful and the shipping is fast. They don’t always have a huge stock of everything they carry, and sometimes they’ll sell out of a certain pattern. When it comes to the patterns it’s usually wise to buy it while it’s there. Otherwise, kpixie is a very cool place to shop. *Does ship internationally; quickly (little under a week most times), and only $15 US flat rate.
Purl Soho carries the top notch luxury yarns, and some wonderful basics. The shipping is fast and they take care to make sure that your package comes to you all wrapped up. I don’t know anything about their customer service as i haven’t had to use it, but if it’s anything like their packaging, it should be excellent. Good service, great yarns! *Does ship internationally; fairly quickly, $40 US flat rate.
Wool2Dye4 is awesome! There’s no better way to put it. They have in stock some of the better Henry’s Attic yarns, which means that they can ship those yarns the same day. The rest of the Henry’s Attic yarns are special order, and will take longer to ship. Their customer service was top notch, sending a sample card of the yarns they keep in stock, with several other goodies. Very impressive.
Roving winners:
All Things Heather has wonderful hand painted fibers and yarns. The colorways are gorgeous, and the prices are easy on the wallet. You can find her items at her shop on Etsy, and at kpixie. Shipping is fast, and the item(s) come well protected.
Spunky Eclectic has a huge variety of great hand painted yarns and fibers. The hand dyed fibers I received in the blink of an eye were in great shape. Typically roving gets a tiny bit felted durring the dyeing process, and the ones I bought had very little evidence of it. I was very impressed. *Does ship internationally.
Winderwood Farm has some gorgeous rovings. The colors are vibrant, and the blends are amazing. The prices are very good. The shipping was a bit slower than I expected. It took about 4 days for the item to be sent, which was a bit of a surprise. The roving was worth the wait though.
